I've had cause to travel to the Yuma area recently. The highway stretches through vast desert areas where the desert soil turns to sand. You're sure that a spot of blue sea will soon appear on the horizon but it doesn't. You'll pass stock yards and ranches here and there, some operating and some not, leaving the abandoned marks of man amongst the tamarack trees and occasional palm and for your pleasure the highway will pop out from a rock cropping to offer a view of the Union Pacific Railway with a freight train churning along beside you. l've portrayed Ken Hankins as the proverbial desert hermit that we will always have with us.... a desert oasis with sardines and crackers and oh yeah, a train.
