Other Lives

A few months ago one of our farm cats decided to have her kittens in the nice cool shade of an irrigation ditch. The irrigation water came and filled up the ditch. I spotted the mother standing on the bank, reaching over and pulling her little day old kittens out of the water by the back of their necks. I went over to help. I brushed away some dry grass and spotted a little lifeless calico kitten about to sink into the water. I scooped it out of the water. It was cold and limp. I remembered a video on Instagram of a man giving a puppy CPR and a little voice in my head said "go ahead." So I breathed some air into its mouth and did a couple of chest compressions with my thumbs. (Yes, I'm weird). It came back to life! It moved and let out a meow. The mother came and picked it up and took it to her new location. I saw the kitten several weeks later and was glad to see it thriving. I wish this story had a better ending but it's been several more weeks since I've seen the calico. Many birds of prey and coyotes frequent the farm and I fear the worst. As I get older I should understand life's cycle better but it seems the loss of a little furry friend bothers all the more.
